Critical Evaluation and Recommendations

Global Mobility education spans a spectrum from formal academic study to practical, hands-on workshops and country-specific preparation. You can combine these types depending on your career stage, needs, or the markets in which you operate. Understanding the differences you appreciate not only the range of learning available but also how global mobility skills are developed in practice.

  • Depth vs. breadth: Academic programs are broad and rigorous, while industry or practitioner courses are targeted and practical.
  • Country-specific versus country-inclusive: Country-specific courses offer in-depth knowledge in one locale but may not be generalizable. They are often better suited for immigration, tax specialists, and social security practitioners, with a focus on INBOUND assignments and international hires into a specific inbound hub (e.g., the ZHAW course in Switzerland).
  • Credential vs. application: University courses offer credit and formal recognition, while practitioner courses focus on immediate workplace relevance. Their credentials stem from the experience of the teachers and course leaders, and they bring in diverse views on Global Mobility. Ideally, you look for a mix, where you already work in the field while building your knowledge, attitude, skills, reflected experience and body learning (read more about Angie Weinberger’s Global Competency Model https://docs.google.com/document/d/1lBXm7VxUMeHR0P1SIQUpM-507hE1q_M2LyeHrxtkJ2M/edit?tab=t.0
  • Emerging topics vs generic approaches: Some courses focus on specific trends such as AI adoption or include sustainability and DEIB, remote/hybrid assignment design, data analytics, and strategic workforce mobility. Angie Weinberger focuses on assignment policy development, GM strategy, expat experience design and communication in Global Mobility. However, she can teach all the topics mentioned in the GM Academy and in her books.
