My Red Couch Talk with Hugh Docherty

In the middle of the heat wave, Angela Weinberger had the pleasure of recording a robust conversation with Hugh Docherty from EY, who shared his accidental entry into expat tax, insights from 27 years at EY, and how global mobility is evolving to meet strategic talent needs.
🧠 “Mobility needs to be more than operational—it must be strategic and talent-focused.”
This insight from Hugh Docherty of EY still resonates. On the Red Couch, we explored how global mobility is shifting post-COVID, and what skills will define its future: from AI-enhanced processes to human-centered leadership.
Hugh Docherty very much recommends you spend some time reading the EY Mobility Reimagined Survey.

Hugh Docherty was born in Glasgow. After finalizing his legal studies he joined EY, 27 years ago, in the wonderful world of expat tax. He finds himself fortunate that he made that decision as the world of mobility provides countless opportunities for us to grow not just professionally but as humans.
His career has taken him from Scotland to London and finally Switzerland after some detours via the US and Singapore. Each of these locations not only provided insights into how assignees feel when they move but the experience of growth from embracing new cultures and learnings. He would describe the best part’s of his job as building long term relationships with clients formed on cocreating solutions to tricky questions – be that tax, reward, immigration, talent or technology.
Outside of work he can be found badly cycling around in Switzerland and trying, unsuccessfully, to stop his dog rolling in things she shouldn’t.
He very much recommends you spend some time reading the EY Mobility Reimagined Survey;

The Red Couch Talks
The Red Couch Talks feature thought leaders, expats, and entrepreneurs in #globalmobility. We use a red couch as a backdrop for a deeper conversation, almost like a coaching session. It’s the only furniture we‘ve had since I was eight. It’s been around the block and travelled with me from place to place. It’s almost falling apart, but it’s my happy place to chill.
